About the Dojo

Shibumi Aikikai, founded in 1997, is an aikido dojo for the practise of Aikikai style aikido.

We strive to create a balanced middleground between the traditional spirit of the Orient and the open inquiring attitude of the West.

Our dojo provides a caring environment where every student is important.

The chief instructor, Peter Gelberger, is a Brampton resident, and has been involved in Aikido for the past 21 years. He has also studied Chito-ryu Karate and Judo. He was awarded his black belt in Aikido in 1993 by Y. Yamada, 8th – dan, President of the US Aikido Federation.

What Does Shibumi Mean?

The kanji or character for shibumi has many meanings.  Depending on context it may be used to describe the taste of persimmons as "sharp" or "astringent".  Not immediately flattering labels for an Aikido School, are they?  But as context is critical in the Japanese language so it is here.  The term may also describe the subtle and elegant patterns of a fine kimono.  Or the effortless grace of a bird in flight.

We hope to maintain a state of "shibumi" in the latter context.  Our club was formed out of a desire to create an opportunity to find effortless grace in our practice and lives.
